Single Rose (Short Story #1)

A single rose

When I got to my door I dropped my bag of groceries. This was not good. He had found me. I was running from him for years and I finally thought I was safe after not hearing from him in 3 years but now I realize that I wasn’t. I turned towards the street and looked up and down it, seeing if there was anything unfamiliar. When I saw nothing I turned back to my door and quickly grabbed my keys, fumbling with them at first, then unlocked my door. Luckily only a few things fell out of my grocery bag so I picked it up and brought it inside. I left the the rose and letter on the front door.

I slammed my door shut and locked it. I quickly walked into the kitchen and placed the bag on the counter. I looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall seeing that it said 7:30 pm. There wasn’t much time before my stalker would come. What was I going to do? I couldn’t just up and leave. I had a job and friends! Maybe one of my friends could come be with me? No…. I didn’t want to drag them into this mess and risk one of them getting hurt. I didn’t know what he would do. He could become dangerous.

Maybe I could call the police? Maybe they could protect me? I went to my purse and dug through it until I finally found my cell phone. I dialed 911 but the call wouldn’t go through. Why wouldn’t it go through? I then saw that I had no service. How was that possible? I then remembered that there was a way for someone to block cell service from a distance. Shit! That meant he was already here and just waiting for 8:00 pm to roll around.

I couldn’t go to the neighbors for the same reason that I wouldn’t get my friends involved. Not to mention he would probably stop me if he saw me go to a neighbors.

I was alone. I was scared. How long was he following me this time?

He would for sure beat me like the last time he found me. Angry because I ran. My only choice was to run again. I would have to just call my job tomorrow and say that I wasn’t able to work there anymore.

But what about my friends? What would I tell them? They would be suspicious of me just to randomly disappear like that.

7:45 pm

I had to go. I ran upstairs and into my room. I grabbed my suitcase from my closet and placed it on my bed, unzipping it and opening it. I went to my still opened closet and grabbed clothes and just threw them into the suitcase along with a few things from my dresser. I walked into my conjoined bathroom and grabbed the things I needed from there. I went back to my closet and reached up and grabbed a small box that contained emergency money just in case this would happen again. There was about $2,000 dollars that I had saved for this moment.

I stuffed it in my suitcase and then zipped the suitcase up. There was still a few things I needed downstairs. I picked up my suitcase and quickly went downstairs and back into the kitchen. I grabbed my phone charger that was plugged into the wall on a counter. Then I went to the dining table to grab my laptop, laptop charger, and laptop bag. I put the laptop and the charger into the bag and went back into the kitchen. I was about to head out the door but….

There was a knock on the door….

8:00 pm.
